The future of Hackney’s Library Service.

There is a new public consultation that the Hackney Council is undertaking to help shape the future of Hackney’s Library Service.

You can share your views by completing the online survey at: https://ourlibrarieshackney.commonplace.is.  There are separate surveys for people who use the libraries and those who are non-users.

Introduction

We believe our libraries are one of Hackney’s greatest assets in our community, providing safe spaces for the whole community to read, learn, access support, in eight locations across the borough. Each library plays an important role in supporting the individual needs of Hackney’s diverse communities, through the provision of books, magazines, newspapers, computers, internet access and a rich programme of activities delivered both online and in person.

Wherever you live in Hackney or however you benefit by coming to our libraries, we want to hear from you about how we can shape things in the future. We also want to hear from you if you don’t usually use our libraries.

What happens next?

Hackney Council is carrying out a review of its libraries and the services we provide you. We want to create a long-term strategy for the Libraries Service that will put it at the forefront of the Council’s relationship with residents and the cultural life of the borough. We have been speaking to our library staff and colleagues across the Council about their views and experiences working in partnership with and directly for our libraries now we would like to hear from you.

We want you to tell us:

  • How do you use our libraries currently?
  • How would you like to use library spaces in the future?
  • What additional services would you like to see offered in our libraries?
  • How can libraries better support your needs?
  • How do we ensure more people from our diverse communities use them?
  • If you don’t use libraries, why not?

Your views and information will help to shape the future of Hackney’s libraries and ensure that our local libraries reflect the needs of local people.

The demographic data we will collect alongside your feedback and ideas will help us develop a strategy that responds to the local needs of our community. All information is used under the strict controls of the 1998 Data Protection Act and the 2016 General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR). We will anonymise your data and the findings from the analysis will be used to develop the priorities for a new Library strategy which we will share with you in 2022.

Residents can leave a voice message and request assistance or a copy of the survey in an accessible format or in a different language by calling 0208 356 6199.

The closing date for submissions is 11 October 2021.
