This week on TakuRoku, we’re delighted to present singular new work from Lao Dan and Sylvia Hallett.

Lao Dan is one of artistic mainstays at our comrades Old Heaven in Shenzhen, and one of the current key players in the improvised music, experimental music and jazz scenes in China. One day we really hope we can host Lao Dan in the venue, but in the meantime we’re delighted to share this 4-part new solo offering, seeing Lao Dan explore the lyrical possibilities of the saxophone in a variety of different settings.

Sylvia Hallett works as an improviser and as a composer, often collaborating with dance and theatre makers. She is known for her unusual interpretation of “bowed instruments”, playing anything from violin, sarangi, hurdy-gurdy, saw, to bowed bicycle wheel, bowed sawn-off lampshade, or more recently bowed branches and vines, mostly with the accompaniment of 3 small effects pedals. As Sylvia says; “During the course of the year I have been occasionally recording the human and natural sounds as they occur in my back garden. I also recorded some “live playing” indoors using saw, bowed branches, with effects pedals, and worked on the results in logic.Bolt and Latch is a 20 minute journey into this sound world.”

Also this week, a heads-up that we’ll be releasing another TakuRoku release on Friday in the form of UK artist, Haroon Mirza‘s ‘Pathology in Three Parts’ to coincide with his new project as part of the Liverpool Bienalle! Pathology in Three Parts follows Mirza’s “modular opera” structure, and features two scenes or “acts” from a previous iteration, Construction of an Act (2019), either side of this new performative element.
