Dear Neighbours,
Thank you for continuing to support each other during these difficult times.
A little update from us with some requests is below.
Supporting the Food Hub and NGAG
The Newington Green Food Hub is currently delivering food to 300 people twice a week and we expect this number to increase further. Local schools, including Newington Green Primary will be opening again on Monday, which means that they will have to end their (Newsnight featured) food hamper programme. We want to be ready for new families and individuals that might need a bit of extra support from the Food Hub
Bankuet, a charity that makes it easier to give to food banks has chosen us as one of their partners. If you are able to make a donation, Bankuet will bulk order the things we need and deliver directly to us. You can donate to the Newington Green Food Hub here.
We also ask all of you to sign up to The Giving Machine. Every time you shop online at lots of big retailers we will get between 1-2.5% of what you spend without you needing to donate. Please create a profile on The Giving Machine and select Newington Green Action Group as your charity. It only takes a couple of minutes so please do it now if you can.
Masks
So far, we’ve distributed more than 450 cloth masks made by the amazing Stitch by Stitch and those of you who answered the call to join the Sewing Club in previous newsletters. We’ve also donated 200 disposable masks to the Whittington Hospital.
Following the government announcement that wearing a mask will be mandatory on public transport, we wanted to remind you that free cloth masks are available at the Food Hub every Tuesday and Friday, 12pm-7pm. You can also send us an email at info@newingtongreen.org.uk with the subject line “Masks” if you are self-isolating and would like us to deliver a mask to you.
#volunteersweek
A huge thank you to everyone who volunteers with Newington Green Action Group. 120 of you are actively volunteering and hundreds supporting through donations. More than 55 volunteers are now doing calls, delivering food and working at the Hub.
Thank you also to our ever-growing community of business donors:
Demand for food is growing so we’d hugely appreciate your help connecting with other potential suppliers. If you can help approach any other shops or businesses for a potential donation, or if you have any ideas we should follow up on, please email food@newingtongreen.org with “Supplies” in the title.
This week, we also wanted to give a special shout out to Castle Food Service, based up at Castle Climbing Centre. We’ve tried lots of different prepared meals providers but they are the absolute best. They are using their vacant kitchen, financial resources and fresh food grown in their permaculture garden to make 160 ready meals for the Food Hub each week. And we’ve received fabulous feedback about their delicious food. Thank you!
Today we especially need tinned tuna, tinned fruit and kids’ cereals. Come by between 12pm and 6pm to The Mildmay Club.
Volunteering at the Food Hub … or online
If you’d like to be more involved with the Food Hub please email food@newingtongreen.org with “Hub volunteer” in the subject line.
We’re also looking for another person to help out with our Instagram account. Please send an email to info@newingtongreen.org with “Instagram volunteer” in the subject line if you are interested.
Green-ing Newington Green
Many of you will have noticed the pavement widening at Green Lanes by Tesco. If you think that other streets need similar measures then write to Jenny at jenny.kay@islington.gov.uk.
This year’s Islington in Bloom has moved online. If you have been working hard on your garden (or window box) and want to show it off, you can apply here and send us a picture to post on social media by replying to this email or using Instagram.
In solidarity,
Team NGAG
