Celebrating 180 years

On 20 May 2020 we’re marking the 180th anniversary of the opening ceremony of Abney Park Cemetery. We’re putting together a number of online events in the run up to and on this special day and we’d love you to join us for this celebration.

180th Anniversary Online Talk and Q&A

The Victorian Arcadia

7pm on Wednesday 13 May

Romany Reagan will give a talk entitled ‘Victorian Arcadia: A Journey Through Abney Park’s History and Evolving Meaning as a Victorian Garden Cemetery‘. This short talk will present the history of Abney Park — sharing a picture of the land itself; its place in wider mourning shifts and societal changes; and what Abney Park means for us today as a vital community space.

The event will be streamed live and will include a Q&A session.

180th Anniversary Online Talk and Q&A

How Abney Happened / Abney’s Suffragettes

7pm on Wednesday 20 May

Join us online for a fascinating double bill. First up Alan Gartrell will be talking about George Collinson – the driving force behind the creation of Abney Park Cemetery – and how Abney Park Cemetery came into being. This will be followed by Sam Perrin giving a talk about the Suffragette history of Abney Park.

The event will be streamed live and will include a Q&A session.

Both anniversary events are free, but please consider making a donation to our survival campaign, if you attend, to ensure Abney Park Trust can continue in their care and promotion of this beautiful space. We would like to thank you all for your continued support so far.
