For New Year’s Eve we’re incredibly happy to welcome the astounding trio of Chicago footwork originator and pioneer RP Boo alongside ever-radical, longstanding collaborators Seymour Wright and Paul Abbott, following their stunning set at Glasgow’s Counterflows Festival this year. While RP Boo’s footwork takes from the rhythmic structures of Chicago house and the samples, grooves and melodies of 60’s/70’s Chicago soul, disco and R&B, Seymour and Paul share a fascination with these musics, and bring to this lineage a long term engagement with Chicago’s jazz traditions, from Baby Dodds to the AACM. Come early and enjoy Japanese Izakaya style food by our friends ‘Drumsco’ on sale from 7:30pm to 10pm. A section of special dishes will be available including Toshi-koshi Soba special buckwheat soba noodles with soy sauce and Konbu seaweed traditionally eaten at the end of the year to wish for a long lasting life.
As a thank you to all of you for your continued support in helping us to do what we do here at OTO, we’re very pleased to present a special free download release from Sounds of Sisso’s Bamba Pana and Makaveli! Hailing from Dar Es Salaam in Tanzania, Bamba Pana and Makaveli send up nearly two hours of singeli sound. Producer Pana gets legs dead with a consistent blistering of 180bpm whilst Makavelli spits defiant, satirical lyrics about everything from police corruption to dating while broke. Raw, fast, and with a DIY aesthetic that smashes together Zanzibari taraab, noise, gabber and happy hardcore, they sound like no other sound system culture in the region.
Also, just a reminder that throughout December we’re offering 10% off ALL tickets and shop items – shows, LPs, CDs, posters, downloads, books and more; just use the code ‘xmas18’ when you checkout.
We look forward to seeing you here.
