Clean Up River Lea

Clean up of River Lea

Councillor Jon Burke and staff from Hackney Council joined in an event to clean up the River Lea and fight the battle of plastics ending up in our seas. It was organised by Plastic Free Hackney with local groups, such as Lea Boaters, as part of a national beach and river clean on Saturday 28 October.

The litter picking took place across the Lea Canal, managed by The Canal Trust. They had a great turn out with 80 people despite the cold and collected over 100 bags of waste, an inflatable mattress, an iPad, few phones, three bikes, toy doll, shoes and a bed pan.

Zero Waste Challenge

Join the #ZeroWasteHackney challenge

The European Week for Waste Reduction runs from Saturday 17 to Sunday 25 November so we’re asking residents and businesses to join the movement against waste.

If you don’t recycle much, you can give food waste recycling a go. If you already recycle a lot, rethink the way you use single-use disposables and explore low-waste living such as swapping  shampoo bottles to soap bars or buying loose fruit and vegetables.

Small changes really can make a big difference.

Solar panel

Power to Hackney

Hackney is tackling climate change head on and delivering on its commitment to be the cleanest and greenest council borough. Plans are underway to develop an Energy Company Delivery Board by early 2019.

Hackney’s energy company delivers on the urgent action required to reduce carbon and forms part of the journey towards using renewable energy across all functions by 2050.

The Council plans to utilise solar panels on 50% of Council-owned residential roof space.

It will also drive social change and support vulnerable residents with an estimated 9,700 households in Hackney suffering from fuel poverty.
