Amongst the shows over the next seven days, it’s a (dual) pleasure to welcome back the the sax/drums duo of Ken Vandermark and Paal Nilssen-Love to OTO. Having played together for more than a decade, the pair continue to use free improvisation to explore all levels of dynamics, density, rhythm, timbre, form and tonality for some of the most intense, exhilarating, and boundary breaking music around.
This week’s digital release is from Body/Head – aka Bill Nace and Kim Gordon. Prior to Body/Head’s 2013 release ‘Coming Apart’, Bill Nace quietly put out a limited 12” of the duo’s material on his own label, Open Mouth. Largely instrumental, with lattices of interwoven sustained guitar, “Where Did You Go?” is as much of a ‘song’ as the record holds, with Gordon ditching lyrics in favour of channelling improvising vocalists like Alice Coltrane. Long sold out in print, it’s a pleasure to share this one as a digital release. More from Open Mouth to follow.
A load of new announcements this week, including a two-day residency for Container, plus shows for Otim Alpha and Lee Ranaldo.
