Amongst the shows over the next week, Giovanni Di Domenico brings new work, Insalata Statica to OTO, with an 8 piece band, formed by young (and a bit less young) musicians, an occasion to hear the composition in a new dress. Insalata Staticatakes listeners from passages of melancholic introspection through to fuzz-laden melodic exuberance. The subtle, shifting harmonies, rhythms and textures are deftly arranged – often blurring lines between a wide variety of acoustic and electronic instrumentation – to form a coherent arc from beginning to end.
This week’s digital release is a set from Rattle – the duo of Katharine Eira Brown and Theresa Wrigley, both on drums and both on vocals. They played their first set at OTO as part of The Ex’s 2016 residency, and returned in 2017 to deliver their gleefully deconstructed and hypnotic songs in support of Sacred Paws. Stripped of ego, spacious and infectious, Rattle make structured minimalism unnerving, a little awkward, but mainly fun.
New show announcements this week include Apartment House performing works by the late, great American composer, Julius Eastman, and a two-day residency from Vibracathedral Orchestra and Guttersnipe.
