At Cafe OTO

Amongst the shows over the next seven days, we host The Queen of Mbira music from Zimbabwe – Stella Chiweshe. The first female artist to gain prestige and recognition in a music tradition usually dominated by men, Chiweshe is an acclaimed mbira player – an instrument known as the backbone of Zimbabwean music.

Really pleased to release five more recordings from the Incus catalogue this week. This time we’ve focussed on Derek Bailey’s Company – “ad-hoc groupings” of fantastic free improvisers – including Evan Parker, Anthony Braxton, Tristan Honsinger, Fred Frith, Steve Lacy, Jamie Muir, Hugh Davies, Wadada Leo Smith, Akio Suzuki, Steve Lacy and many others. Essential listening – enjoy!

New shows announced this week include a rare OTO appearance for Earth guitarist, Dylan Carlson, as well as well as the OTO Christmas Fair.

Full listings below. We look forward to seeing you here.

NEW ON OTOROKU:

KAN MIKAMI / JOHN EDWARDS / ALEX NEILSON – LIVE AT CAFE OTO (PRE-ORDER)

Japanese bluesman Kan Mikami is nothing less than an unalloyed force of nature. A skin-shredding blast of frozen wind from the poor, rural north of Japan that he calls home. In the late 1960s, like thousands of other Japanese young people Mikami made his way to Tokyo in search of a life different from that of his parents. Since then he has forcefully carved out a space for himself in the culture as a modernist poet, a raging folk singer, an author, a actor, an engaging TV personality, and one of Japan’s most uniquely powerful performers

NEW ON OTOROKU:

HAINO KEIJI / JOHN BUTCHER – LIGHT NEVER BRIGHT ENOUGH LP/CD (PRE-ORDER)

Keiji Haino: Vocal, Guitars, etc
John Butcher: Saxophones and Feedback

Keiji Haino, one of the foremost exponents of the Japanese avant-garde, always provides a masterclass in constantly shifting improvisation. John Butcher is a saxophonist of rare grace and power, who has expanded the vocabulary of the saxophone far beyond the conventions of jazz and other musics, to encompass a staggering range of multiphonics, overtones, percussive sounds, and electronic feedback.

‘The Institute of Signals and Noise and The Wail that was Warning’: Aura Satz and David Toop

London Review Bookshop •
30 November 2017

Aura Satz and David Toop will be performing in our intimate downstairs venue at the Bookshop.

Between noise and signals, alarms and dial tones, sirens and whistles, wails and howls, masked language and hidden voices, the evening’s improvisations will uncover a variety of sound textures, anecdotes, calls to attention, imperatives and doubts.
