Cafe OTO

Hi there

Amongst the shows over the next seven days, the great Mike Cooper celebrates his 75th birthday with us in the company of an all star group of musical improvising friends; Pat Thomas, Orphy Robinson, Michael Thieke and Tim Hill.

This week’s digital release is the debut London performance for the duo of Limpe Fuchs and Evan Parker – two giants of avant garde music. Fuchs brings her unique menagerie of sounds to the space – variable wood and stone blocks (marble and serpentinite sourced from Sondrio in Upper Italy), ringing bronze pendulum strings and a variety of skin and bronze drums sound out alongside her own voice and a two toned harmonic violin. Parker’s intuitive finding of endings, of pauses and of ways to engage with Fuch’s personal rhythms is perfect – surely the beginning of a regular duo? We hope so.

New shows announced this week include a ebut solo show at OTO for New York composer, Peter Gordon, plus Richard Youngs performing his debut album – Advent – on Advent Sunday.

Full listings and all new shows below. We look forward to seeing you here.

NEW ON OTOROKU:

PAT THOMAS – THE ELEPHANT CLOCK OF AL JAZARI

£15 (£13 members)

Recorded live at OTO in May 2015 and mastered by Giuseppe Ielasi, the LP comprises four typically genre-defying and sonically dexterous pieces from one of the UK’s most extraordinary pianists.

Criminally unheralded, Pat is a fearless and uncompromising player who – despite coming from a background of free improvisation and new music – can feel as close to the worlds of noise and experimental music.

OTO RECOMMENDS:

Eddie Prévost and John Butcher

27 November • London Review Bookshop

Prévost is perhaps best known as one of the founding members of the legendary ensemble AMM, which was set up in 1965 by a group of improvisers who were interested in going beyond jazz and incorporating ideas from modern composition.

John Butcher is a former physicist and a pioneer of electroacoustic improvisation who often amplifies his instrument to produce percussive and otherworldly sounds. He has played with Prévost on several occasions, as a duo – captured on the album Interworks – and in various other formations.

The bar will be open from 6.30 p.m.
