A free day of entertainment designed by locals to celebrate the neighbouring communities of Woodberry Down, surrounded by an extraordinary urban wetland oasis
Though it’s neither new nor a river, the New River has its own, 5-year old festival! The Hidden River Festival is back with a bang with a free, vibrant day of live music, art, crafts, food and events for the whole family.
The 5th annual festival celebrating the Hidden River running through Hackney and Haringey returns Saturday 9th September from 12:00pm to 6:30pm, outside the Redmond Community Centre, N4 2HF, to the Wetland Gates along the New River Path.
Built over 400 years ago, the New River (in actuality a viaduct), was an engineering feat of its time. Dug by hand, it is still in use today, bringing Londoners fresh drinking water from springs in Hertfordshire. Visitors can walk nearly its entire length thanks
to the New River Path which provides a unique green oasis in this area teeming with wildlife and beautiful vistas for the public to explore and enjoy.
Nestled beside the East and West Reservoirs at Woodberry Down, the New River creates a stunning backdrop for the festival. The day’s events, including a Wetland treasure hunt, live music and theatre, arts and crafts workshops and canoeing down the New River, wind along landscaped paths and a modern kids’ playground. If you fancy a family-focused day with an intimate, community vibe surrounded by nature, this is the festival for you.
Organised by the regeneration partnership at Woodberry Down including Manor House Development Trust, the Woodberry Down Community Organisation, the London Borough of Hackney, Genesis Housing and Berkeley Homes, the event is attended by hundreds of Woodberry Down residents, with visitors from other areas of London bringing the total attendance to over 2,000 people each year. Volunteers from the immediate community are involved in all parts of the festival, ensuring its success. Confirmed performers: Psycho Delia (Dee Plume from Robots in Disguise and The Mighty Boosh), Raka (Balkan Band), Selvie Wonder, Hummingbird, Phoebe Coco, Pandorasdiary, VEI (Lisa Watchorn), Astrid Brook, Keedah & Ganjy, and many more. An array of food and drink stalls will be on site, including healthy and vegan options.
