At Cafe OTO

Hi there

Amongst the shows over the next seven days we host one of the most original and innovative Krautrock bands, Embryo“Thirty years on, Christian Burchard’s Embryo, despite constant personnel changes, still managed to be one of the foremost bands to explore the outer reaches, where the musics of the world met one another and bled together. To call Embryo a “fusion band” is both accurate, and a gross understatement. There is no mixing together in the band’s music, it is the creation of something completely new, multi-lingual, and transcultural they are after.” – Thom Jurek

After last week’s 100th release on our own digital label, we’re pleased to add three more heavy titles to our burgeoning licensed catalogue – this time from London based record label, Fataka. Releases have often been recorded here, or by some of our favourite artists, and the label specialises in putting faith behind new or one-off duos or trios – ‘At OTO’ documents the first meeting of local reed player John Butcher with extraordinary pianist Matthew Shipp. Dig in.

New shows announced this week include the duo of Ulaş Özdemir and Arash Moradi – who bring together the sacred musical traditions of Turkey’s Alevi-Bektashi-Qizilbash and Iran’s Ahl-e Haqq, and seminal noise artists, The New Blockaders, celebrating the 35th anniversary re-issue of their landmark album Changez Les Blockeurs.

DIGITAL RELEASES:

BUTCHER / LEHN / TILBURY – EXTA

In ancient Roman religious ritual, exta were the organs of a sacrificed animal offered up to the gods – the lungs, heart, liver and gall bladder; here, Exta is a selection of four pieces (one in two parts) carefully extracted from a long studio session.

“This gloriously unhurried, constantly shifting music—each dynamic stimulus tempered by currents of textural stasis, notably on the initial stretch of ‘lecur’—resists summation. It is an enthralling, exemplary piece of work.” – Tim Owen, Dalston Sound

JOHN BUTCHER & MATTHEW SHIPP – AT OTO

First meeting of pianist Matthew Shipp and reed player John Butcher recorded here back on Valentine’s Day 2010. It was an unusual, perhaps even awkward combination, given Shipp’s deep roots in the American free jazz tradition and Butcher’s key position at the more abstract end of European free improvisation, but the pairing proved productive, and the two pugnacious individualists found a common space in which to work and forge new musical bonds.

JOHN BUTCHER / THOMAS LEHN / MATTHEW SHIPP – TANGLE

“Shipp’s manic repetitions, Butcher’s scalar blankets, and Lehn’s warm reverb remind the listener of certain eras of experimental improvisation and composition, but it isn’t the remembrance that contains the power, but the feeling that this is something fresh and new. It is a music that brings up new ideas and paradigms” – Nate Wooley

OUT NOW ON OTOROKU:

PAT THOMAS – THE ELEPHANT CLOCK OF AL JAZARI

PRE-ORDER LP – £15 (£13 members)

Recorded live at OTO in May 2015 and mastered by Giuseppe Ielasi, the LP comprises four typically genre-defying and sonically dexterous pieces from one of the UK’s most extraordinary pianists.

Criminally unheralded, Pat is a fearless and uncompromising player who – despite coming from a background of free improvisation and new music – can feel as close to the worlds of noise and experimental music.
