At Cafe OTO

Hi there

Amongst the shows over the next seven days, Danish saxophonist, Julie Kjær joins forces with the English powerhouse rhythm section of Steve Noble and John Edwards. Experimenting with rhythms and sounds the trio pushes their instruments to the limits, blending the classic elements of jazz with new sounds.

This week’s digital release is a duo set from flutist, composer and educator Nicole Mitchell (making her London debut at OTO) and the great drummer Mark Sanders. Together they create  a strikingly sparse and minimal sound, but one which is no less full of joyous melodic hooks and grooves reminiscent of a stripped back Art Ensemble.

New shows announced this week include the return of The Wire Salon in the form of an audience with Val Wilmer, plus residencies from Träd, Gräs och Stenar and faUSt.

Full listings and all new shows below. We look forward to seeing you here.

DIGITAL RELEASE:

NICOLE MITCHELL & MARK SANDERS – 14.5.16

£6 (£5 Venue Members) /

Digital Members: Download with credits

Last year we invited flutist, composer and educator Nicole Mitchell to make her London debut at OTO. Though originally lined up to play with semi frequent collaborator Joelle Leandre, Joelle had to pull out at the last minute. Instead, we asked Mark Sanders if he would like to play. Having never met before, Mark’s restrained approach to the kit, with skipping brushes on toms and light touches to a ride, a bell or wooden blocks gives remarkable space and air to Mitchell’s unique synthesis of flute and voice. Together they create  a strikingly sparse and minimal sound, but one which is no less full of joyous melodic hooks and grooves reminiscent of a stripped back Art Ensemble.

Available as 320k MP3 or 24 bit FLAC

NOW AVAILABLE FOR PRE-ORDER:

PAT THOMAS – THE ELEPHANT CLOCK OF AL JAZARI

PRE-ORDER LP – £15 (£13 members)

Recorded live at OTO in May 2015 and mastered by Giuseppe Ielasi, the LP comprises four typically genre-defying and sonically dexterous pieces from one of the UK’s most extraordinary pianists.

Criminally unheralded, Pat is a fearless and uncompromising player who – despite coming from a background of free improvisation and new music – can feel as close to the worlds of noise and experimental music.
