Amongst the shows over the next seven days, we host N.M.O. the project of North Sea drummer and producer Morten J. Olsen and Mediterranean synthesis aficinado Rubén Patiño. N.M.O. is an ever-changing acronym that incorporates club music, performance, miltary drumming, fitness and absurdity. What they call ‘Military Danceable Space Music and/or Fluxus Techno’ is a unique blend of repetitive percussive patterns and synthetic sounds that combined with performative aspects explodes during their short and intense live shows.
This week’s digital release is a set from composer, saxophonist and sound artist Antoine Chessex. Usually known for playing through distorting stacks of guitar amplifiers to create monolithic walls of noise and texture, on 12.12.16 he instead teamed up with free music giants John Edwards and Steve Noble to play an all acoustic trio – an attempt to deconstruct the ‘classic’ formula of the tenor sax, bass and drums. Right off the bat Chessex’s extended technique reaches combustable energy levels, and Edwards and Noble push pace and space to a taut intensity. Fresh, fierce and always in control – we very much hope this trio returns to OTO. For now though, dig in to this.
Hope to see you here.
