At the Rio

Showing From Today

IT’S HERE ! – Classic Almodóvar treat
Julieta (15)

Showing until Thursday Sept 8

A chance meeting sets off  an emotional journey in which regret, guilt and love are all perfectly realised through Almodovar’s masterly sense of mystery, heart-wrenching performances and his trademark vibrant use of colour. It all adds up to a flawless, dazzling and beautiful masterpiece.

“Love, loss, melodrama and a dash of camp: Julieta is unmistakably the work of iconic Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar. Although not as crazy and frenetic as the likes of 1988’s Women On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown — it’s instead closer in spirit to 1999’s All About My Mother, centred around maternity and the search for a loved one.”
Anna Smith EMPIRE 4/5 stars

As their friendship grows, Sophie’s presence attracts the unwanted attention of Bloodbottler, Fleshlumpeater and other giants. After traveling to London, Sophie and the BFG must convince Queen Victoria to help them get rid of all the bad giants once and for all..

Kubrick Special – Dr Strangelove (PG)  PLUS a live set by St Leonard’s Horses

plus DJ sets and after party in the foyer and Little Nan’s

Earlier this year enigmatic indie artist Saint Leonard had the privilege of being able to record his debut album at the estate of Stanley Kubrick in St Albans, the very house where many of the his films were shot. To begin the evening Saint Leonard’s Horses will play a live show of the material recorded there. This will be followed by A short film ‘You, Me & Ulysses‘ charting the remarkable journey of the album. This will be followed by the main feature showing of Kubrick’s timely comedic masterpiece ‘Dr Strangelove‘. As edgy and hilarious as it was 50 years ago, it’s message is all the more poignant in light of current global events.
There will be aftershow drinks and an informal Q and A with the team behind the record, special guest DJ’s and undoubtedly quite a lot to talk and dance about in Little Nan’s Cocktail Bar directly beneath the cinema.

Passport To Pimlico (PG)

Classic Ealing Comedy with the residents of Pimlico discovering that the area is really an independent country. But taking advantage of the situation has unexpected consequences… Original, witty and quintessentially British, it provides a snapshot of life and attitudes in a post-war world of rapid social, economic and cultural change. The best of British character acting keeps the zany satire bouncing along but it is the hidden, darker undercurrents which really fascinate 60 years on.

Over 50’s – tickets only £2 !
Plus free tea, coffee and biscuits.

Thursday Sept 8 at 9pm – advance booking essential – stalls sold out, LAST FEW circle seats available

One More Time With Feeling 3D (18)

A unique one night only event, the first ever opportunity to hear ‘Skeleton Tree’, the sixteenth studio album from Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds.
The film will screen in cinemas prior to the release of ‘Skeleton Tree’ on the following day. Originally a performance based concept, ONE MORE TIME WITH FEELING evolved delving into the tragic backdrop of the writing and recording of the album. Interwoven throughout  are interviews and footage, accompanied by Cave’s narration and improvised rumination. Filmed in black-and-white, colour, and 3D, the result is fragile, raw and a true testament to an artist trying to find his way through the darkness.
