At Cafe OTO

Hi there

Amongst the shows over the next seven days, Japanese sound artist, Tomoko Sauvage, presents waterbowls – porcelain bowls of different sizes, filled with water and amplified with hydrophones (under-water microphones) with drops, waves and bubbles resonating in the bowls as well as underwater feedback creating waving drones and natural overtones.

On Sunday and Monday, we’re incredibly excited to welcome back the great Aaron Dilloway for two nights! One of the most forward-thinking and unpredictable artists working in the fields of electronic and noise music, Dilloway has long since carved out his own distincitve niche since leaving formidable trip metal gods Wolf Eyes over a decade ago. These two evenings will see him perform both solo and in a brace of compelling duos with Vicky Langan and Evan Parker.

All of this week’s listings and newly announced shows below.

Hope to see you here.

RECITATIVO: FRAGMENTS (AFTER LUCRETIUS AND NEGRI)

An evolving performance layering text, voice, sound, music and images devised by David Ryan

WITH:
KELCY DAVENPORT  //SPEAKER
WILL CROSBY  //GUITAR
KRISZTIAN HOFSTADTER  //SOUND

SATURDAY 19 MARCH  /  Doors Open  6.30pm  /  Performance  7.00pm

Recitativo – Fragments (after Lucretius and Negri) is a continuous work in progress that brings together text, voice, sound, music and images. It takes its starting point from the notion of a recitative, the narrative recitation in early opera with its musical accompaniments. It explores the intertwining of texts from classical and contemporary times, namely the Roman Lucretius, the disciple of Atomism, and the Italian Antonio Negri, whose work draws on Lucretius in developing a new materialist thought.  These texts become fragments that intertwine, overlap and veer between the informational and the concrete or poetic, each becoming material to be placed in time.

OTO RECOMMENDS:

BRASS MASK + CHARLES HAYWARD

WED 30 MARCH • RICH MIX

Led by reedsman Tom Challenger (Outhouse, Fofoulah, Red Snapper), Brass Mask is a nonet of percussion and seven horns delivering loping riffs, growling basslines and the old-time church spiritual groove of the American deep south. Built on the bottom end of Tuba player Theon Cross (Sons of Kemet), and Drummer John Blease (Ghost Poet), The Keyboards of Dan Nicholls (Strobes) collide with the brass section that spontaneously weaves other-ly shapes, sounds and colours.
