DID YOU KNOW...
The Rio is a registered charity and in addition to showing the pick of the new releases we provide an extensive programme of schools screenings and affordable access to cinema for older people, children and community groups. We need to improve our financial situation over the coming months not only to maintain our distinctive and diverse programming but also to improve and add to what we already offer as well as to make a start on a programme of renovations to the wonderful building in which we work. One of the best ways to make all this possible is simply to visit us often to see films and treat yourself to the wide range of goodies in our licensed Cafe. If you are not already a member, joining the Friends of the Rio is also an invaluable way of supporting us, as well as being very good value if you visit the cinema as many times as we'd like you to!

Running a fully independent stand-alone cinema is a costly business and if you can afford to make a donation – whether large or small – it will be very welcome and will certainly be put to very good use.

(BBFC Insight: Contains strong real sex)
(France 2013) dir. Alain Guiraudie 100m. Subtitles. Digital.
Pierre Deladonchamps, Christophe Paou, Patrick d'Assumcao, Jerome Chappatte.
Alain Guiraudie's 2013 Cannes double prize-winner is a tense thriller, set on the shores of a picturesque lakeside gay cruising spot in rural France, which also raises some serious and complex issues as it memorably mixes the comic and the tragic. Franck (Pierre Deladonchamps) is attracted to the lethally dangerous Michel (Christophe Paou). He is aware of the dangers that the relationship might bring but in this relationship there are no boundaries... With its haunting imagery and compelling depiction of an enclosed world, STRANGER BY THE LAKE is an explicit, eerie and intelligent exploration of human desire.

This clever 3D animation comedy-thriller may be the most fun you'll have with ghosts and zombies since Halloween. When a small town is besieged by zombies, only misunderstood Norman can save the day but he'll also have to take on ghosts, witches and, worst, of all, grown-ups to save his town from a centuries-old curse. A darkly charming delight and for Roald Dahl fans that's as ghoul as It gets!

Nymph()maniac One-Night Stand
NYMPHOMANIAC Volumes 1 & 2 (18)
(BBFC Insight: Contains strong real sex, strong sex references, very strong language and strong violence)
(Belgium/Germany/Denmark/France/UK 2014) dir. Lars von Trier 241m. Digital.
Charlotte Gainsbourg, Stellan Skarsgard, Stacy Martin, Shia LaBeouf, Jamie Bell, Uma Thurman.
A special presentation of the new two part film from director Lars von Trier with introductions from members of the all star cast broadcast live via satellite. The actors will also take part in an on stage Q&A session after the screening. Groundbreaking and controversial NYMPHOMANIAC revolves around the extensive and diverse sexual experiences of Joe (Charlotte Gainsbourg) related in flashback to the man who has offered her shelter after a brutal beating. The first part features the younger, experimental woman: the second is more concerned with Joe’s quest to rediscover the pleasures of sex. Both parts contain graphic sex scenes, but with von Trier at his most exciting and profound, the result is nothing less than a visually dazzling and thought provoking meditation on love, art, religion and desire.

Benjamin Britten's PETER GRIMES (12A)
Conductor: Edward Gardner, Director: David Alden, Set Designer: Paul Steinberg.
Cast: Stuart Skelton, Elza van den Heever, Iain Paterson, Rebecca de Pont Davies, Matthew Best, Leigh Melrose, Michael Colvin, Felicity Palmer.
Experience the searing psychological drama, intrigue and suspense of Benjamin Britten's PETER GRIMES live from the London Coliseum, the first English National Opera production to be shown live in cinemas and also the first live opera presentation at the Rio. David Alden's award-winning production paints a vivid picture of a small community's descent into suspicion, gossip and mob mentality in the face of a tragedy. In a small coastal fishing village in Suffolk, fisherman Peter Grimes's apprentice disappears at sea. What really happened to the boy? Was Peter Grimes involved? The wildness of the sea and the instability of Grimes's mind are superbly reflected in Britten's music, some of the most evocative ever written. With Stuart Skelton's performance in the title role being described as 'definitive,' this production is indeed a brilliant contribution to the celebrations commemorating the centennial of a great composer.
N.B. The performance will start at 3.00 sharp and end at approximately 6.10.

ONLY LOVERS LEFT ALIVE (15)
(BBFC Insight: Contains strong language)
(US 2013) dir. Jim Jarmusch 123m. Digital.
Tom Hiddleston, Tilda Swinton, Mia Wasikowska, John Hurt.
The original indie provocateur Jim Jarmusch returns with a mischievous, humorously deadpan take on Gothic cinema and life in general. Adam (Tom Hiddleston) and Eve (Tilda Swinton) are vampires who have been in love for centuries. He's a reclusive musician living in downtrodden Motor City but if there's one thing he reviles more than the vulgarity of contemporary populist culture, it is Ava (Mia Wasikowska), Eve's younger, ultra-destructive sister, whose uninvited presence threatens to put an end to the couple's eternal love... A fun, and frequently very funny, contemplative look at music, time and love, rich in both production design and cherishable performances.
N.B. The Tuesday 4 March 6.00 show will have subtitles for the Hard of Hearing.

* Friday 7 March for 2 weeks
THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL (15)
(BBFC Insight: Contains strong language, sex references and brief gory images)
(US 2014) dir. Wes Anderson. 100m. Digital.
Saoirse Ronan, Ralph Fiennes, Bill Murray, Tilda Swinton, Jeff Golblum. Owen Wilson.
Time for more meticulously crafted delights as the unique stylistic flourishes, the quirky absurdities, the distinctive visual and narrative style and the highly addictive soundtrack combine for another visit to the wacky world of Wes Anderson. With the far from negligible help of a glittering cast, THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL recounts the adventures of Gustave H, a legendary concierge at a famous European hotel between the wars, and Zero Moustafa, the page boy who becomes his most trusted friend. Also featuring the theft of a priceless Renaissance painting and the battle for an enormous family fortune, it is all played out against a back-drop of a fast-changing world. A treat.
N.B. The Tuesday 11 & 18 March 6.30 shows will have subtitles for the Hard of Hearing
